Recently, at the factory of Shandong Alva Machinery Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Alva Machinery"), the entire waste refrigerator dismantling line independently R&D, designed and manufactured by the company has successfully completed the full-process test run. Verified by third-party authoritative testing institutions, all systems of the production line operate stably, with the dismantling efficiency 300% higher than that of traditional equipment, the material separation purity reaching 99.2%, and the harmless treatment rate of hazardous substances at 100%. All performance indicators exceed industry standards and meet the preset goals of "safety, efficiency, environmental protection and precision".
The successful test run of this dismantling line marks that China has broken through international technical barriers in the field of core equipment for resource utilization of waste home appliances, and established an independent whole-industry chain system covering R&D, manufacturing and system integration, providing equipment support for the green circular economy under the "dual carbon" goal. At present, the production line has completed pre-delivery commissioning and packaging, and will be shipped from Qingdao Port to be put into practical operation of resource recycling of waste refrigerators soon.
I. Industry Background: Urgent Demand for Waste Refrigerator Disposal, Alva Advances Equipment Upgrade
(1) Growing Output of Waste Refrigerators and Prominent Disposal Demand
With the continuous improvement of Chinese residents' living standards and the acceleration of consumption upgrading, the home appliance industry has ushered in an unprecedented peak of replacement. As an essential durable consumer good for families, refrigerators usually have a service life of 10 to 15 years. According to the "2024 China Home Appliance Recycling Industry Development Report" released by the China Household Electrical Appliances Association, the output of waste refrigerators in China reached 28 million units in 2023, and this figure is expected to exceed 35 million units by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of over 12%.
Improper disposal of waste refrigerators will cause environmental hazards. The polyurethane foam in the cabinet contains ozone-depleting substances such as Freon, and direct landfilling or incineration will pollute the atmosphere and soil; heavy metals in the inner tank and compressor as well as hazardous substances in the circuits will seep into the environment, affecting the ecology and human health. At the same time, waste refrigerators contain a large amount of recyclable resources, with steel accounting for about 55%, plastic about 30%, and non-ferrous metals such as copper and aluminum about 8%. About 1,200 tons of resources can be recycled from every 10,000 waste refrigerators, which is equivalent to reducing iron ore mining by 3,000 tons and saving 800 tons of oil, showing significant resource utilization value.
China's waste refrigerator dismantling industry has long been plagued by problems such as backward equipment, low efficiency and incomplete recycling. The traditional manual dismantling mode features high labor intensity, poor working environment, high safety risks, low material separation accuracy (resource recovery rate less than 60%), and substandard treatment of hazardous substances, which may cause secondary pollution.
(2) Policy Guidance and Market Demand Drive Equipment Upgrade
Green development is an important direction of China's economic and social development. As an integral part of the circular economy, the recycling and utilization of waste home appliances has received policy support. The "14th Five-Year Plan for Circular Economy Development" clearly lists the "construction of waste home appliance recycling and utilization system" as a key task, and proposes to "improve dismantling and treatment capacity and promote intelligent and green dismantling equipment". The "Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Construction of Waste Home Appliance Recycling and Utilization System" requires that by 2025, a number of intelligent dismantling demonstration projects will be built, with the independent rate of core equipment exceeding 80% and the comprehensive resource utilization rate reaching 95%.
Policies provide a development direction for the industry, but China's high-end waste home appliance dismantling equipment has long relied on imports from Germany and Japan. The equipment quotation is as high as more than 80 million yuan, coupled with slow after-sales service response and high spare parts costs, which restricts the large-scale development of the industry.
As a leading enterprise in China's crushing machinery industry, Alva Machinery has taken on the task of R&D of independent high-end dismantling equipment. Mr. ALLEN WANG, Chairman of the company, said: "Waste home appliance recycling is an industry related to ecological and resource security. Relying on its technical accumulation, Alva will develop dismantling equipment that meets domestic needs and improve resource recovery efficiency."
(3) Alva's Technical Foundation and Project Layout
Founded in 2003, Alva Machinery focuses on the R&D and manufacturing of crushing and screening equipment and solid waste treatment equipment, and has sufficient technical accumulation in the waste recycling field.
In 2018, Alva Machinery noticed the potential of the waste home appliance recycling industry, launched the preparation for the R&D of related equipment, established a special team to conduct industry research, and officially initiated the R&D project of the "entire waste refrigerator dismantling line", listing it as a core strategic project.
To ensure the progress of the project, the company adopted the "industry-university-research-application" model, cooperating with the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the School of Mechanical Engineering of Qingdao University to jointly tackle key technical difficulties in material identification, precise separation, environmental protection treatment, etc. At the same time, it cooperated with large domestic waste home appliance recycling enterprises to put the R&D results into pilot production, completing the "R&D-test-optimization" closed loop.
II. Technological Breakthroughs: Overcoming Core Difficulties and Establishing Independent Equipment System
(1) Core Technical Difficulties and Solutions
Waste refrigerators have complex structures, containing multiple materials such as metals, plastics, foams and refrigerants, with great differences in brands and models, which brings challenges to the R&D of the production line. Alva's R&D team needed to solve five major technical problems: first, realizing automatic feeding and positioning of refrigerators of different specifications; second, improving the separation purity of materials such as steel and plastic; third, efficiently recycling Freon to achieve harmless treatment; fourth, improving the overall dismantling efficiency through intelligent control; fifth, reducing equipment energy consumption to achieve green operation.
After three years of research, the R&D team has formed solutions to the above problems. In the automatic feeding link, the "adaptive clamping + intelligent positioning system" is adopted. Through high-definition visual recognition and multi-degree-of-freedom robotic arms, automatic grabbing, flipping and positioning of refrigerators of different sizes and weights are realized, with a positioning accuracy of ±5mm and a feeding efficiency of 60 units per hour, which is higher than manual feeding (15 units per hour).
In the material separation link, the "multi-stage crushing + intelligent sorting" technology is developed. The "low-speed shear crusher" is used for the initial dismantling of refrigerators to separate the cabinet from the compressor; then the "high-frequency vibrating screen" separates steel scraps, and the "eddy current separator" separates non-ferrous metals such as copper and aluminum; the mixture of plastic and foam is classified by the "air separation + infrared spectrum recognition" technology. The independently developed "intelligent recognition algorithm" achieves a material recognition accuracy of 99.5% through machine learning.
In terms of Freon recovery, Alva independently developed the "low-temperature condensation + vacuum suction" system, which increases the recovery rate to 99.8% through precise temperature and pressure control, realizing purification and reuse. The system is equipped with a leak monitoring device, which can start emergency treatment in a timely manner to ensure environmental safety.
The intelligent control adopts the architecture of "central control system + distributed execution unit", realizing real-time data interaction and collaborative control of equipment through the industrial Internet. Operators can complete start-stop, parameter adjustment, fault diagnosis and other operations through the central control terminal, and the system can automatically adjust the operation speed according to the feeding volume. The remote operation and maintenance function can realize real-time monitoring and fault troubleshooting of equipment, reducing operation and maintenance costs.
In terms of energy-saving design, technologies such as high-efficiency motors and frequency conversion control are adopted, reducing the unit energy consumption of the production line to 1.2 kWh per refrigerator, which is 40% lower than that of imported equipment. The equipment is equipped with dust collection and noise control devices, with the dust concentration at the operation site lower than 10mg/m³ and the noise lower than 75 decibels, meeting national environmental protection standards.
(2) Core Composition and Performance Indicators of the Production Line
After three years of R&D and optimization, Alva has formed a waste refrigerator dismantling line composed of "automatic feeding system, precise dismantling system, intelligent sorting system, environmental protection treatment system and central control system". The production line is 45 meters long, 10 meters wide, covering an area of 450 square meters, with a processing capacity of 60 units per hour and 1,000 units per day, which is more than 5 times that of the traditional manual line. Its main performance features include:
1. High degree of automation. The entire production line only requires 3 operators, while the traditional manual line needs 20-30 people. Automatic operation reduces labor intensity and safety risks, and avoids direct contact of personnel with hazardous substances.
2. High separation purity and resource utilization rate. The separation purity of steel is 99.5%, copper and aluminum 99.0%, and plastic 98.8%, with the comprehensive resource utilization rate exceeding 95%, 35 percentage points higher than the traditional method. Calculated based on the daily processing capacity of 1,000 units, 660 tons of steel, 360 tons of plastic and 96 tons of copper and aluminum can be recycled every day, bringing considerable annual direct economic benefits.
3. Environmental protection compliance. The Freon recovery rate is 99.8% and the dust collection rate is 99.9%. All emission indicators meet the requirements of the "Environmental Protection Technical Specifications for Dismantling and Treatment of Waste Home Appliances", realizing harmless and resource-based treatment.
4. Convenient operation and maintenance. The central control system has the functions of data collection, analysis and early warning, which can real-time monitor the equipment operation status, processing volume, energy consumption and other data and generate reports. Remote operation and maintenance shortens the average fault resolution time to within 2 hours, and the overall equipment efficiency exceeds 90%.
5. Obvious cost advantage. The manufacturing cost is reduced by more than 50% compared with imported equipment, and the selling price is 40% of that of imported equipment. The after-sales service and spare parts supply are more convenient, which can help customers reduce the comprehensive operating cost by more than 30%.
III. Test Run Process: Full-Process Verification to Confirm Equipment Availability
(1) Preparation for the Test Run
To ensure the smooth progress of the test run, Alva established a special working group composed of R&D, production and technical service departments, and formulated a test run plan and emergency plan. Before the test run, the working group completed the comprehensive inspection and commissioning of the production line, identified 2 potential hazards and completed 1 optimization and improvement.
A total of 10 waste refrigerators for the test run were provided by cooperative recycling enterprises, covering brands such as Haier, Midea, Gree and Siemens, including single-door, double-door, three-door and side-by-side door models, simulating actual production conditions.
Mr. ALLEN WANG, General Manager of Alva Machinery, said at the test run launching ceremony: "The test run is a test of the equipment performance and the company's service capabilities. We will complete the test in accordance with standards to ensure the delivery of qualified equipment to customers."
(2) Test Run Process and Results
After the waste refrigerators are transported to the feeding port by forklifts, the robotic arms of the automatic feeding system complete grabbing, placing and positioning without manual intervention, with a positioning time of 5 seconds per unit.
In the dismantling link, the low-speed shear crusher separates the refrigerator cabinet from the compressor. The equipment adopts the "low-speed, high-torque" design, which reduces dust and noise and avoids excessive crushing of materials. The separated compressor is sent to a special processing unit, where refrigerants and lubricating oil are recovered through high-temperature heating and vacuum suction, and then the shell is crushed to separate the internal copper coils from the steel components.
The refrigerator cabinet enters the multi-stage sorting system: the high-frequency vibrating screen separates large-grain steel scraps, which are purified by the magnetic separator to obtain waste steel with a purity of 99.8%; the mixture of plastic and foam is separated by air separation, and the foam is sent to the Freon recovery system; the plastic is classified into ABS, PP, PS and other types by the infrared spectrum sorter, and sent to the corresponding collection bins by the air-jet device.
Operators in the central control room monitor the operation of the production line through intelligent terminals, and real-time check equipment parameters, processing volume, energy consumption and other data. An operator introduced: "The control system can automatically adjust the operation status, and will alarm and prompt solutions in case of faults, so the operation difficulty is low."
Within one hour, the first batch of 6 waste refrigerators was completely dismantled. On-site sampling tests showed that the purity of waste steel was 99.5%, copper and aluminum 99.0%, and ABS plastic 98.9%, which met the expectations.
(3) Problem Rectification and Shipping Preparation
After the test run, Alva started the packaging and shipping preparation of the production line, completed the anti-rust and sealed packaging of the equipment, prepared technical documents and vulnerable parts, and arranged a technical team to go with the equipment. The production line is planned to be shipped from Qingdao Port and put into operation after arriving at the customer's factory.
IV. Industry Value: Promoting Equipment Independence and Industrial Upgrading
(1) Improving the Independence Level of Equipment
This production line realizes the independent control of core technologies and equipment, changing the situation that China's high-end waste home appliance dismantling equipment relies on imports. Its cost-performance advantage provides an alternative for domestic enterprises, and it is expected to increase the independent rate of core equipment in the industry from less than 20% to more than 80%.
Mr. Guo Chengzhan, President of the China Environmental Protection Industry Association, said: "This achievement is an important progress in the independent innovation of China's environmental protection equipment, which will drive the development of the upstream and downstream industrial chains and enhance the international competitiveness of the industry."
At present, a number of large domestic waste home appliance recycling enterprises have signed procurement intention agreements with Alva, and enterprises from countries along the "Belt and Road" such as Russia, India and Brazil have also expressed their cooperation intentions.
(2) Promoting the Large-Scale Development of the Recycling Industry
The low efficiency of traditional manual dismantling makes it difficult to achieve large-scale operation, which restricts the development of the industry. Alva's production line has a daily processing capacity of 1,000 units and an annual processing capacity of 300,000 units, which is 5 times that of the traditional manual line, and can significantly improve China's waste refrigerator processing capacity.
The promotion of this production line will help build a recycling system featuring "large-scale collection, intelligent dismantling and high-value utilization". Large-scale dismantling can reduce the unit processing cost and attract social capital investment; high-purity separation can improve the resource utilization value and provide raw materials for the steel and plastic industries.
Taking a recycling enterprise with an annual processing capacity of 500,000 units as an example, after adopting this production line, it can recycle 275,000 tons of waste steel, 150,000 tons of plastic and 40,000 tons of copper and aluminum annually. Compared with the traditional mode, it can recover an additional 115,000 tons of resources, significantly improving economic benefits while reducing environmental pollution and governance costs.
(3) Supporting the Achievement of the "Dual Carbon" Goal
Waste home appliance recycling is an important part of the circular economy, which can reduce carbon emissions. Through efficient resource recovery and energy-saving design, Alva's production line provides support for the "dual carbon" goal.
Calculations show that each waste refrigerator processed by this production line can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 0.8 tons. A single production line with an annual processing capacity of 300,000 units can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 240,000 tons, which is equivalent to planting 667 hectares of trees. Its energy-saving design can save about 547,500 kWh of electricity and reduce coal consumption by 164 tons annually.
As a potent greenhouse gas, the recovery and utilization of Freon is of great significance for mitigating global warming. With a Freon recovery rate of 99.8%, a single production line can recover about 1.5 tons of Freon annually, which is equivalent to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15,000 tons.
Mr. ALLEN WANG, Chairman of Alva Machinery, said: "Green development is an important direction for the company's development. We will continue to invest in the R&D of environmental protection equipment to support the achievement of the 'dual carbon' goal and the development of the circular economy."
